| Muthyala Maduvu or pearl valley |
|
It is an hours drive from Bangalore and must be almost 40kms. Its in the periphery of Banneraghatta National Park. To reach the place, head out on Banneraghatta Road, continue beyond Banneraghatta National Park and reach
Anekal.
Don't expect good roads, but you should be able to manage without much problems. An alternate, slightly longer road is to reach Anekal via Attibele by taking Hosur Road. Don't expect to find any food or accomodation, but unfortunately you can find some one selling beer and soft drinks!! Start early and reach by 8 or 9am to enjoy the quiteness of the valley in early morning and also to avoid noisy day trippers who arrive later in the day.

Nandi Betta is a hill 1200m above sea level and is just a 50km drive from Bangalore. It is incredibly beautiful in winter mornings and all through the monsoon days as gets filled with fog and spreads a mystical magic on the hill.

To reach Nandi Hills, take the 6 lane Bellary road towards the new Bangalore International Airport and drive on the highway till Devanahalli. Continue on the highway and after a 5 minute drive from Devanahalli, you will see a left turn which takes you to Nandi Hills. For those who want to stay through the night, government accommodation(typical PWD guesthouse) is available in limited numbers but no other options. Food is available on the hill top but is very basic and don't have high expectations.

The best thing about Mutathi is that it is just 90 minute drive once you leave the town. Drive on the Kanakapura road through Kanakapura and Sathanur. Turn left at Satanur and drive for another 30 minutes to reach Muthathi. You drive through the hills and wilderness of Cauvery wildlife sanctuary and get good views of the river.
There is no accomodation available in Muthathi village but nearby Bheemeshwari has a resort run by Jungle Lodges and Resorts. Advance booking is necessary. Pack your food before you leave the town since there are no restaurants available. Nearby places that can be visited include the Bheemeshwai Jungle Lodge which is famous for angling activities. It is known as one of the best places to catch Masheer fish. Also close by are Mekedatu, Chunchi falls and Kaveri Sangama where river Arkavati meets Kaveri

| Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary |
|
|
Ranganathittu is located just off Bangalore - Mysore highway, close to Srirangapattna and is around a 120kms from Bangalore. Start early from Bangalore so you can reach there before the sun is high. Morning times are best for bird watching, but keep in mind that the place is open only between 8.30 and 5.30. From Bangalore, drive on the Mysore road till you reach Srirangapattana, continue further for another 3kms and then turn right. After driving for another 5 minutes in this road, you reach the right turn to the sanctuary. Drive for 5 more minutes on the banks of a small canal to reach the sanctuary. If you plan to visit just Ranganathittu, it would be easier take ksrtc buses early in the morning, get down at Srirangapattna and take a rikshaw to the sanctuary.
Nearby places to see include Tipu's fort, his grave at Srirangapattna and Sangama where two branches of Kaveri - Poorvavahini and Paschimavahini re-unite. This place being very close to Mysore, you can also visit this city of palaces if you have time.
|
| Sangama, Mekedatu and Chunchi falls |
|
Sangam is the confluence of Rivers Kaveri (Cauvery) and Arkavathi. One more nice
picnic spot along Kanakapura Road (NH209) formed around River Kaveri, it can be
reached by taking a 33km deviation to the left, soon after Kanakapura,
along NH209. A big arch is placed there to tell you the route. About 16kms from
Kanakapura you will reach a junction, to the right of which is Cauvery fishing
camp. Go straight for Sangam. The last five kms to Sangam is an enjoyable drive
through the ghat roads, with picturesque hills all around you. Water is not so
deep at Sangam and is very clean, in spite of the huge crowd generally found
here
The river flows through a deep gorge at the point called
Mekedatu. The gorge is deep and at some points the rocks bridges the river, so a
goat can leap across. Therefore, the name Meke (goat) Datu (leap). .
The area is covered by hills on all sides and its very unlikely that you can
spot wild life here. A special bus ply between these two places almost every
hour
CHUNCHI FALLS
This is a small water falls on the way to Sangam. Take the Sangam Road after
Kanakapura and after 23kms you can spot a road on the left side going to Chunchi
falls. 5kms more from here for the falls. Thanks to the Prime Minister's Gram
Sadak Yojana roads are good to this place. This water falls is nothing
particular, but worth seeing if you are going to Sangam/Mekedatu.

| Shivanasamudra - Gaganachukki and Bharachukki waterfalls |
|
|
Shivanasamudra can be approached either via Bangalore to Mysore road or Kanakapura road. If you are taking Mysore road, you need to turn left at Maddur and drive some distance. On Kanakapura road, keep driving for around 120 kms on the highway. Shivanasamudra is very close to the highway. Kanakapura road is usually devoid of much traffic and is preferred way for driving. The roads are not very good and it may require 3 hours to cover the distance, so plan to leave early. There are no hotels close by and no accommodation or restaurants available on location. Nearby places to visit include Talkad, which has nice sandy shores by the river and a few historical monuments.
|
|
Talkad is another place on the banks of Kaveri ideal for a day trip or picnic. One would be surprised to see seashore like sandy banks here. You will miss the waves though.
People often come here in big groups to spend some time in the wide-open area on the banks, play some games and spend a good time. If you wish to, you can wade through neck deep waters and walk to the other side of the river in summers. You can also hire coracles and take a short trip on the river. Talkad also hosts some historical temples just a short walk from the riverbank, recently unearthed by archeological department.
|
|
A small checkdam constructed here across Kaveri has made this an excellent pinic rendezvous. In late winter and summer, shallow water running on the dam platform and the falling water attracts people in plenty.
It is fun to sit under the fall and let the falling water give a massage your back. Good time to visit is winter season when there is just enough water in the river.

Hogenakkal is located in Karnataka - Tamilnadu border, around 200kms
from Bengaluru. Its situated near Dharmapuri.
You need to take Hosur road and drive through Hosur and Krishnagiri, turn left after Krishnagiri and reach
Dharmapuri. At Dharmapuri, you can see a junction, one of the roads
going towards Hogenakkal, via Pennagaram. Another route, which is shorter,
but less travelled is via Hosur - Rayakkottai - Palakkodu - Pennagaram. Or
even shorter, but bad roads, via Hosur - Denkanikota - Pennagaram.
Hogenakkal is also along Kaveri river, this time dropping down around 100ft
into a deep canyon forming waterfalls on all sides. Small round boats
are available to take you to the middle of the canyon and from there to a

REACHING:Brahmagiri wildlife sanctuary is a restricted area and one has to take permission from Range Forest Officer(RFO) at Srimangala village. Call the RFO a few days in advance and inform your trekking plans so that they can arrange a mandatory escort for you. Getting permits is easy and hassle free.To reach Srimangala, take a KSRTC bus to Gonikoppal from Bangalore, which is 6 hours journey. Change buses here and travel for another hour to Srimangala. Pay the necessary fees at Srimangala RFO office and get your permits.
ACCOMMODATION NEAR IRPUYou can get no-frills accommodation at the temple near Irpu offers. There are also some home stay kind of resorts near Irpu, one is Ramcad which is pretty close to Irpu. Nearby village Kutta has some places like Pearl Garden, Chilligere Estate and High Falls Holiday
TREKKING IN THE PARKThe Narimale camp, which is in the middle of the forest, is the best place to stay. Camping elsewhere is probably not allowed, but check with the RFO if you want to. | Yedakumari Sakaleshapura and Subrahmanya |
|
REACHING:To reach the place, take buses plying from Bangalore to Mangalore. If you take the night bus, you can reach early in the morning. You need to get down at the last town where the bus stops - Sakaleshapura. The trek starts from a small village called Donigal. Take a local transport to Donigal village, which is a short trip further on the Bangalore to Mangalore road. Some buses from Bangalore may stop at Donigal on request, but ask in advance. Otherwise you may be able to hitch a ride from a friendly truck driver who would not mind some extra buck. Those who know the route well get down much ahead of Donigal and then get into the track to reduce the total walking distance.
JOURNEY :The trek itself is around 16km if you start from Donigal. It takes around 6-8 hours to complete. You could take shelter in the abandoned station then, but unlikely it is abandoned now. But if you have a sleeping bag and/or a tent, you may be able to manage. Those interested can head further next day on the track to reach next station Sirivagilu and then to Subrahmanya and then return by road. But there is much to explore in Yedakumeri and I advice to stay there for another day.
MUNJARABAD FORT: A short detour in Donigal village will take you to Munjarabad fort. Note that these days you have to wait till 6am to get into the fort, since the doors will be closed before that. We had the luxury to get into the fort at 5am once and watch from the top the arrival of the sun, but that is no longer possible.

Taking an early morning bus(5am) to Mysore and changing to an Ooty bus would be the best option for people who intend to trek. It takes around 5 hours by car and 6 hours by bus from Bangalore. If you are staying the forest department accommodation in Bandipur, it is better to take a bus since you would not find much use of your car once you reach the place.

You can take bus or train to nearest town - Sagar and travel on local buses to Jog. If you are driving, the entire stretch of road is national highway in good condition but you may encounter a few rough patches. It takes 7-8 hours to reach Jog. You need to take Tumkur road(NH 4) from Bangalore and turn left to NH 206 in Tumkur, drive via Shimoga and Sagar towns. Shimoga is a good place to break for some refreshments if you are driving daytime. Continue for another 30kms on the highway from Sagar town. The waterfall is a short 2kms deviation from the highway..
PLACES :You can spend an entire day around the waterfall. If you are fit, climb down to the base of the fall. It takes around 20minutes to walk down, and may take an hour or two to come back depending on your fitness. You can take a dip in the water when you are in the gorge. Drive to the other side of the waterfall and you can get close to the falling water. In summer, you can even bend down from the fall to see it descending all the way down from up close. It is a great experience, but definitely not for the acrophobics. Drive further down the national highway into deep jungles and enjoy the views of the Sharavati valley.

REACHING: To reach Dandeli from Bangalore, you can take direct ksrtc buses, but book in advance. But it is preferable to take your own vehicles since the distances are high and you can't rely on public transport. To reach Dandeli, you can drive to Dharwad which is on NH4(via Tumkur) and then take a diversion to Dandeli. You can also choose an alternate route that goes via Shimoga, it is longer but is more pleasant and scenic. You can also deviate a bit and visit Jog falls on the way if you take this road. To take this route, take NH4 to Tumkur, turn left and reach Shimoga and then Sagar which are on NH206: Bangalore - Honnavar road. From Sagar, you have to go via the towns Siddapur, Sirsi and Yellapur to reach Dandeli. Jog falls is a short deviation between Sagar and Siddapur. Expect bad roads in the later part of this journey, but it takes you through forests and good landscapes unlike the Dharwad road.
PLACES :The number of places you can visit in Dandeli are plenty, so try and keep as much time as you can when you plan a visit. Dandeli is nearly 500km from Bangalore. It is also very close to Goa and Maharashtra and is hence visited by many people from Goa and Bombay..
